Tucson Hung Gar Wing Chun Club
About
Founded in 2001, Tucson Hung Gar Wing Chun Club is an official branch of the International Chiu Chi Ling Hung Gar Kung Fu Association and The World Ho Kam Ming Wing Chun General Association and is an organization specializing in Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu, Wing Chun and Traditional southern Chinese lion dance. Our goal is to offer cultural preservation of these arts through private instruction, educational presentations, and performances for auspicious events. Just like our current members, we are an open group that welcomes students from all backgrounds.
Our main focus is traditional southern Chinese martial arts. The roots of Tucson Hung Gar Wing Chun Club's style originate in the teachings of Grand master Chiu Chi Ling, who brought his family's Tiger and Crane system to the U.S.A. over 20 years ago and lives and teaches in Alameda ,California near San Francisco. Grand master Chiu Chi Ling (趙志淩) is one of the most knowledgeable and famous masters of Hung Gar Kung Fu and was born on January 20th, 1943 in Guangzhou, China. In the early 1970s, he opened a school which attracted many celebrities, athletes and performers. This exposure to the entertainment industry gave him his start in acting. He has appeared in over 70 movies, both as an actor and stunt man. His abilities as an actor and martial arts practitioner has allowed him to work with many top Hong Kong film makers and stars including Bruce Li, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat and Stephen Chow and has acted in such well known Kung Fu movies as "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", "Duel of the Seven Tigers" and in the hit comedy "Kung Fu Hustle". His father Chiu Kau (1895-1995) during his entire life was and still is considered to have been one of the most skilled exponents of Hung Gar in the world and his mother, Siu Ying, was also a very skillful expert as well. Today Master Chiu Chi Ling continues teaching throughout a continuous tour around the world, handing down his father’s teaching in the traditional way.
Sifu Lopez has over 40 years of martial arts experience. Not only does he have many years of Hung Gar and Wing Chun experience, but has also practiced other forms of traditional martial arts. With background in empty hand self defense and weapons, we feel our instructors' varied martial arts background helps to train the members to be stronger and more disciplined martial artists.
We at Tucson Hung Gar Wing Chun Club strive to provide opportunities that encourages team work, confidence, knowledge, friendship, and respect. We also provide the opportunity to participate in cultural performances in our community and surrounding areas. This allows us to continually educate our volunteers and students as we share our knowledge to educate the community and open its eyes to what hundreds of years of tradition has to offer.
